Known as "Fighting Shirley," Chisholm defied societal norms and overcame significant obstacles as a Black woman. From her historic run for Congress in 1968 to her groundbreaking bid for the presidential nomination in 1972, Chisholm's life embodied the ongoing fight for racial and gender equality. Today, her legacy lives on through figures like Democratic frontrunner Kamala Harris, whose entry into the race has shattered fundraising records and triggered a massive spike in voter registration, says MSNBC political analyst and political strategist Juanita Tolliver. Like Chisholm before her, “Harris has an opportunity to stand in front of this coalition, who is looking to push her, and make history again,” Tolliver says.
