Civil rights workers Michael H Schwerner Andrew Goodman and James E Chaney disappeared in Philadelphia Mississippi murdered for the work they were doing Schwerner and Goodman white New Yorkers had gone to Mississippi to work with the Congress of Racial Equality also known as CORE of which Chaney was a member of They were successful in organizing boycotts of segregated stores and registering Black voters The efforts would catch the attention of Ku Klux Klan leaders who put out the word that Schwerner was to be eliminated
